How to clean an egg before dyeing

When dyeing an egg, you have to be careful how you prepare the egg beforehand.
The dye is more uniform and radiant with an undisinfected, unrubbed and unemptied egg...
But from a practical point of view, this poses some concern! Indeed, a full egg can sometimes explode, the gases having accumulated instead of flowing quietly... and the sight and the smell are remarkable, believe me!
If you have unmarked eggs, and fairly clean, that you reserve them for personal use, I advise you to clean them with dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge.
If your egg is very dirty, you can use a magic sponge, not a scraping sponge, because you will damage the outer layer of the shell.
To finish, pass them in a bath of vinegar (20% of a 7% or 14% household vinegar is enough); you will see small bubbles forming on the surface of the egg. Dirt and calcium are leaving!
and above all, it slightly acidifies the shell, helping the dye to set.
Rest assured, unless you leave the egg several hours, your egg will not dissolve! but to be able to dye it, it should not be left too long.

If you're like us, with marked eggs, or an obligation to disinfect eggs for health reasons, it's more complicated. Bleaching the eggs is a good way to bleach and sanitize them, but the shell will become resistant to dye, because the bleach has attacked the organic part that retains the color. Only the calcium remains in the shell, and that no longer retains the dye.
In this case, you must be gentle with the bleach (less than 1%) and then go to the vinegar bath. Your shell will be more sensitive to the dye, although the color will be more pastel.
But this preparation is not recommended for sculpture because there is still some membrane inside the egg! You will find our tips for carving eggs here .
If you want to use our eggs to dye them, let us know when ordering! we have batches prepared especially for dyeing!
